When the Guns Speak, Who Listens to the Young?

Africa’s story in 2026 cannot honestly be told only through innovation hubs, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship.

There is another story.

Conflict continues to destroy lives, displace families and interrupt futures in parts of our continent. Behind every geopolitical analysis are ordinary human beings whose ambitions suddenly become secondary to survival.

In August, the African Union convened its fifth continental dialogue on Youth, Peace and Security and Women, Peace and Security. Its focus included giving young people and women a more institutionalised role in conflict prevention, crisis management, resource governance and sustainable peacebuilding.

This brings us to empathy.

Conflict encourages us to categorise.

Government. Opposition. Tribe. Religion. Refugee. Combatant. Ally. Enemy.

Empathy forces us to see the person beneath the category.

The student whose university closed.

The mother carrying a child across a border.

The young entrepreneur whose business disappeared overnight.

The child learning the sound of weapons before learning the possibilities of life.

Young Africans should not simply be expected to inherit peace agreements negotiated by older generations.

They should help create peace.

Because they will live longest with either its success or its failure.

Ubuntu reminds us that another person’s suffering ultimately diminishes all of us.

That does not make peace easy. Nor does empathy erase legitimate differences.

But it changes where we begin.

Not:

“How do I defeat you?”

But:

“How do we live together after this?”

Perhaps peace begins long before the guns become silent.

It begins when we recover the ability to see another human being.
