Africa’s Young People: Not Our Future — Our Present

Africa’s Young People: Not Our Future — Our Present

We often describe Africa’s young people as “the leaders of tomorrow.” It sounds encouraging. But perhaps it also gives us permission to postpone something that should already be happening today.

In February, African leaders meeting within the African Union governance and peace architecture called for youth empowerment to move to the heart of Africa’s governance and peace agenda. The message matters because Africa’s young people should not simply inherit the consequences of decisions made by previous generations. They should participate in making them.

Belonging is more than being welcomed into a room. It means knowing that your voice carries weight once you are there. Across Africa, millions of young people are educated, connected, entrepreneurial and impatient for meaningful opportunity. Yet too often we invite them to conferences about their future while keeping the real decisions elsewhere.

The African value of community reminds us that wisdom does not travel in only one direction—from old to young. The elder brings memory and experience; the young bring imagination, energy and a willingness to question what previous generations accepted.

Perhaps the shift from “Me” to “We” begins here.

Not “What can we do for our youth?” but:

“What can we build with them?”

A society in which young people genuinely belong does not ask them to wait patiently for tomorrow.

It gives them a stake in today.
